The house, which reflects the characteristic of 20th century Turkish architecture, has three floors over the basement. The basement floor was used as a warehouse. The upper floors were the living areas. After the proclamation of the republic, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk also visited Rize during his tour of the great jpurney of homeland called "Autumn Tour" . When he came to Rize on 17 September 1924, he stayed in this house of Mataracı Mehmet Efendi, who became close with him due to his efforts during the War of Independence.

The house was donated to the Rize Special Provincial Administration to turn it into the Ataturk Museum on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk. İt was restored on 27 December 1985 and turned into a museum and opened to visitors.
